Tractor and Machinery Association Sales Summary | Q4 2024

Tractor and Machinery Association Sales Summary | Q4 2024

The fourth quarter of 2024 closed out a challenging year for Australia’s agricultural machinery market, with mixed results across key categories. In this sales summary, we provide insights into the performance of tractor sales and other essential agricultural equipment from October to December 2024, comparing these figures to the same period in 2023.

Annual Review and Key Takeaways

For the full year 2024, total tractor sales amounted to 10,249 units, a 23.2% decline from 13,341 units in 2023. The year-end figures underscore the market’s sensitivity to economic fluctuations and shifting priorities among farmers.

Out front mowers emerged as the strongest performer, closing the year with a 22.2% increase in annual sales. This suggests that while farmers may be delaying large machinery purchases, they are continuing to invest in equipment that enhances efficiency and productivity.

Overview of Tractor Sales

The tractor sales data for Q4 2024 revealed consistent declines across most horsepower categories compared to Q4 2023, with few signs of recovery.

0-40 Hp Tractors

Sales in this category totalled 646 units for Q4 2024, compared to 652 units in Q4 2023—a slight decline of 0.9%. This category showed a rebound in December, increasing 13.9% year-on-year, suggesting some renewed demand for smaller tractors during the holiday season.

40-100 Hp Tractors

This segment recorded 739 units sold in Q4 2024, down 15.9% from 872 units in Q4 2023. While December sales saw an increase from the previous month, the category struggled to maintain consistent demand overall, likely impacted by ongoing cost pressures affecting mid-size farm operations.

100-200 Hp Tractors

Sales in this segment totalled 801 units for Q4 2024, reflecting a 17.7% decline compared to 911 units in Q4 2023. The steep drop in November suggests that market uncertainty and reduced cash flow may be discouraging investment in mid-range tractors.

200+ Hp Tractors

High-horsepower tractors experienced a significant downturn, with 496 units sold in Q4 2024, a 21.3% decline from 617 units in Q4 2023. This indicates that even large-scale agricultural operations are feeling the pinch and holding back on major purchases.

Other Agricultural Equipment Performance

Combine Harvesters

Combine harvester sales for Q4 2024 fell sharply, with only 324 units sold—down 53.7% from 560 units in Q4 2023. This significant drop may reflect completed upgrade cycles earlier in the year or delays in purchasing due to poor seasonal yields.

Balers

Balers recorded 246 units sold in Q4 2024, compared to 301 units in Q4 2023, marking an 18.3% decline. However, November showed slight improvement compared to October, suggesting some regions were actively preparing for the harvest despite broader market caution.

Out Front Mowers

Out front mower sales defied the overall downward trend, totalling 2,338 units in Q4 2024—a 22.3% increase from 1,904 units in Q4 2023. October saw strong sales compared to the previous month, indicating demand for machinery that enhances productivity during peak maintenance periods.

Seasonal and Market Considerations

The agricultural machinery market in Q4 2024 continued to reflect broader economic challenges. Declines in tractor sales, particularly in the 40–100 Hp and 200+ Hp segments, are consistent with ongoing financial pressures faced by small and large farming businesses alike. Inflation, rising equipment costs, and tighter lending conditions have caused many buyers to delay upgrades or opt for used machinery.

However, strong out front mower sales suggest that investment in maintenance and efficiency remains a priority, especially as farms prepare for future seasons. Additionally, the smaller 0–40 Hp segment showed signs of recovery in December, potentially due to end-of-year sales and favourable financing offers.

In contrast, the significant drop in combine harvester sales points to an early completion of major purchasing cycles or caution driven by market uncertainty.

Data Scope and Limitations

The data provided by the Tractor and Machinery Association includes contributions from most, but not all, machinery manufacturers and distributors across Australia. While this report offers a comprehensive overview of market trends, direct comparisons of monthly data should be approached with caution due to the seasonal nature of agricultural machinery sales.
