FCAI Motorcycle Sales Summary: Mid-Year 2025

Updated: Jul 08, 2025 | Nick Ainge Roy | 3 minutes

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) has released its motorcycle and off-highway vehicle (OHV) sales data for the first half of 2025, showing a stable market overall with some interesting movements across key segments.

Between January and June, a total of 42,549 units were sold, the same as during the first half of 2024. While this indicates no year-on-year growth, it also signals that the motorcycle and OHV market has held firm in the face of persistent economic headwinds.

As with all FCAI reports, it’s important to note these figures reflect only sales reported by FCAI-affiliated brands. Several major importers do not contribute data, meaning the actual number of motorcycles and OHVs sold nationally is likely to be higher.

Segment Overview

Road Motorcycles

Road bikes posted a slight decline of 1.9%, with 16,254 units sold across the half-year. While still a key contributor to overall market volume, this segment continues to reflect the cautious consumer sentiment affecting discretionary purchases.

Off-Road Motorcycles

  • The off-road motorcycle segment recorded 16,807 units sold, a 3.3% increase compared to the first half of 2024. This growth continues the upward trend seen throughout 2023 and early 2024, suggesting strong and sustained interest in recreational and rural off-road riding.

Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs)

OHV sales declined by 5.5%, with 6,765 units sold between January and June. This segment, typically linked to agricultural and utility use, appears to be more vulnerable to economic conditions and budget tightening within rural sectors.

Scooters

Scooters were the strongest performers by percentage growth, rising 6.8% year-on-year to 2,723 units. This suggests a growing preference for small, efficient commuter vehicles as urban mobility patterns evolve.

Market Commentary

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber described the overall result as stable and highlighted the shifting dynamics across categories:

“While we’ve seen some movement within individual segments, there remains strong competition and a wide range of products available to consumers,” Mr Weber said.

He also pointed to segment-specific growth as evidence of evolving consumer trends:

“Growth in the off-road and scooter categories suggests evolving trends in both recreation and urban transport. As always, the industry remains focused on safety, innovation and rider engagement across all segments.”

Yamaha maintained its position as the top-selling brand, followed by Honda, Kawasaki, and KTM, continuing the brand leadership trend seen in previous years.

A Resilient First Half for the Industry

Despite varied performance across individual categories, the motorcycle and OHV market has remained remarkably steady through the first half of 2025. While road and OHV sales have softened slightly, off-road motorcycles and scooters continue to gain traction, reflecting ongoing demand in both rural and urban contexts.

With the remainder of the year still to come, stakeholders will be watching to see if this mid-year stability gives way to renewed growth in the back half of 2025.
