Independent Service Centres Outrank Dealership Workshops. Here’s How to Compete
Your Workshop is Real. Google Doesn't Know it Exists
Your service department is staffed, booked, and generating revenue, but search online for the exact work it does, and it vanishes. That’s the reality so many dealership service centres face. They have the workshops and the expertise, but struggle to generate leads online. It’s not a competency issue; it’s a visibility one, and the resolution is simpler than you think.
Before we go any further, let’s test it. Open Google, search ‘caravan service’ or ‘camper service’ near your own dealership, and look at what fills the map results. Do you see your workshop in the initial results?
We ran this in one metro market with roughly ten dealerships clustered nearby. Not one appeared in the local map pack. A single dealer surfaced in the organic results, at position ten. Everything above it belonged to an independent workshop.
That gap is not an accident, and it is not a reflection of workmanship. It is a structural consequence of how dealer websites and business listings are built.
What a Typical Dealer Service Page Looks Like
Most dealer sites treat servicing as a single destination. One page, a booking form, and a row of trust statements that never get explained. Trained technicians. Genuine parts. Competitive pricing. No detail on what a service covers, no answer to the questions a customer asks before handing over their rig, and no content that maps to a specific search.
That page is built to convert someone who has already decided to book with you. It’s not built for someone still working out where to take their caravan for servicing or repairs. Those are two different search intents, and ignoring the latter can cost you genuine leads.
How High-Performing Pages Differ
Independent workshops usually have no brand equity to lean on, so they build for discovery instead. One caravan repair business we examined runs a separate page for each service it performs, covering repairs, renovations, servicing, insurance claims, solar, air conditioning, awnings, and interior fit-outs. Each page carries real specifics rather than a badge. It states three decades in the trade as fact, and explains exactly how an insurance claim moves from quote to completed repair.
Third-party keyword tools put that one site above a thousand ranking keywords and several hundred estimated organic visits a month. And those tools tend to underestimate. Now multiply that across every dealership in a region ceding the same searches to non-dealer workshops and the opportunity becomes clear. Compare what these two pages look like with our mock-up below:
Why Google Makes This Choice
Search isn’t punishing dealers. It’s doing exactly what it’s designed to do: match a specific query to the most relevant page available.
A single service page, as presented in the mock-up, cannot rank for caravan awning repair, insurance claim repairs, solar installation, and habitation servicing at once. Each of those queries needs a distinct page carrying distinct relevance signals. When every intent competes for the same URL, that URL ends up mediocre for all of them. The independent with twelve service pages is not outranking you because it markets harder. It is outranking you because it gave Google twelve answers where you gave one.
The same logic applies to your Google Business Profile (GBP). Most dealer profiles sit under a single dealer category and never claim the categories that match repair intent. Google will not rank you for a service it doesn’t know you provide.
Simple Solution, Big Impact
Optimising your dealer site and GBP to include service centre offerings delivers a competitive edge too good to ignore, including:
Search visibility you currently can’t access
Dedicated pages do not simply add content. They multiply the number of distinct searches your dealership can appear for, including the long-tail, high-intent queries that convert best because the customer already knows what they need.
A separate presence in the local map pack
This is the part most dealers miss. You can register your service department as its own Business Profile nested under the main dealership listing, but only if that profile points to a dedicated service landing page on your site. No dedicated page means no eligible URL, which means no separate entity competing in local results. The website gap and the map pack gap are not two problems running in parallel. One causes the other, and fixing your pages is what unlocks the listing.
Visibility in AI-generated answers
AI Overviews and assistant-generated responses extract specific, structured detail. They cannot do anything useful with ‘quality without compromise.’ They can readily surface a page stating that a caravan service covers gas certification, water system testing, and damp checks, and typically takes a day. Dealers building this content now are creating something machine-readable while most competitors still run a booking form and four badges.
The relationship between purchases
The margin case is stark for car dealers. Deloitte’s 2026 Dealership Benchmarks put fixed operations at 44% of total gross profit for volume dealers, with service running 63-65% gross margin against 9-10% on new vehicles. Aftersales is close to half the gross and by far the highest-margin part of the business.
While Deloitte’s benchmarks focus on car dealers, the relational argument for caravan and RV dealers is strong. Many caravan owners in your region didn’t buy from you. They bought privately, interstate, or from a competitor. When one of them searches for an awning repair and an independent wins the job, that workshop becomes the voice they trust on their rig. Caravan ownership cycles run long, and when the upgrade conversation eventually happens, the business that has looked after the customer for years has considerably more influence than the dealership that has never met them.
Service search is not just about service revenue. It is the cheapest introduction you will ever get to a customer who is already in the market you sell to.
Measurement you can act on
Separate pages mean per-service conversion data. You will see that insurance claim enquiries convert at several times the rate of general servicing requests, and you can invest accordingly. One page collapses everything into an undifferentiated form fill and makes traffic and conversions difficult to measure.
Optimising Your Dealership Workshop in Search
Improving service centre visibility in search doesn’t require a separate website or full rebuild, just some effective tweaks. Here’s what dealers can action now.
Build a service hub with dedicated pages
One hub page linking to a dedicated page for each service you genuinely perform. One independent workshop that does this very well is Oz Caravan World. Below is a snapshot of their service hub page. It includes all their services segmented by category, with each offering linked to its own page.
The example below is extensive, but don’t let it overwhelm you. Depth on a handful of services beats thin coverage of everything. Start building out your own hub with the four or five services prospects ask you about most. Then, roll the others out in stages.
Give each page real substance
Every service page needs what the work covers, who performs it and their qualifications, realistic turnaround time, any warranty implications, honest pricing guidance, and a booking path specific to that service. Keep it relevant to your services and on brand. If a page sounds like any ordinary workshop, it will rank like an ordinary workshop, so keep your service pages original and unique to your business.
Claim the right categories
Add repair-intent categories to your Business Profile, such as repair shop, oil change service, or detailing, and avoid simply duplicating your main dealership category on the service profile.
Set up the nested department listing
If your service department genuinely operates as a public-facing entity with its own staff, hours, phone number, and signage, register it as a separate profile nested under the main dealership and point its URL directly at your new service hub. Google takes a few days to review the submission, but once verified, searchers can find you.
Route service reviews to the service profile
Aftersales reviews pooling on your main dealership listing get diluted by sales feedback. Directed at the service profile, they build exactly the trust signal that profile needs to compete.
Measure per page and reinvest. Track conversion at page level from the start, so the second round of build is informed by what the first round proved.
The Bottom Line for Dealers
Your service department is a genuine competitive asset that most dealers leave invisible in search. The pattern is consistent. One thin page trying to answer every service question at once, a Business Profile filed under a single dealer category, and no separate listing for a department that operates like a business in its own right. Independents fill that gap because they are built for discovery from the start.
Fixing it does not mean rebuilding your website. It means dedicated pages for the services you actually perform, the right categories claimed on your Business Profile, a properly nested service listing, reviews directed where they count, and measurement that tells you what to build next. The dealers who close this gap will own aftersales search in their region, along with the introductions to caravan owners who have never set foot in their showroom.
